Your First Steps

If you’ve recently put your faith in Jesus, we’re genuinely glad you’re here. This is the beginning of something new, and it’s okay if you have questions or feel unsure about what comes next. Growth takes time, and you don’t have to figure it out by yourself. These resources are here to help you take simple, steady steps forward and build a strong foundation.

-STEP #1

UNDERSTAND THE GOSPEL

The foundation of the Christian life is the gospel.

God created us to know Him, but every person has sinned and fallen short of His holiness. Sin separates us from God and we cannot fix that separation through our own effort.

Because of His love, God sent His Son Jesus Christ.

Jesus lived the perfect life we could not live. He died on the cross for our sins and rose again so that we could be forgiven and reconciled to God.

Salvation is not earned by good works. It is a gift of grace received through faith.

When you turn from your sin and place your trust in Jesus Christ, you are forgiven, made new, and brought into a restored relationship with God.

The Christian life begins here.

-STEP #2

START READING THE BIBLE

The Bible is how you learn who God is and how He speaks. It shapes your thinking and strengthens your faith over time.

Start with:

  • The Gospel of John to understand who Jesus is
  • Romans to understand grace and salvation
  • Psalms to learn how to talk honestly with God

Before you read, pray a simple prayer:

“Holy Spirit, help me understand and apply what I’m reading.”

-STEP #3

TALK TO GOD DAILY

Prayer is not about perfect words. It’s about relationship.

God already knows your thoughts. He invites you to come to Him honestly, not pretending or hiding.

You can keep it simple:

  • Thank God for what He’s done
  • Confess your sins openly
  • Be honest about your struggles
  • Ask for wisdom and strength

CONFESS YOUR SINS

Confession is not about shame. It’s about freedom.

When you sin, don’t run from God. Run to Him.

Tell Him where you fell short. Receive his forgiveness and strength to turn from it. The Bible teaches that when we confess our sins, He is faithful to forgive and to cleanse us.

Confession keeps your heart soft. It keeps you close to God. It reminds you that growth is not about pretending to be perfect. It’s about walking in humility and obedience.

You are not rejected when you confess. You are restored.

-STEP #4

WALK WITH HOLY SPIRIT

When you put your faith in Jesus, you were not left alone. God gives you His Spirit to guide and strengthen you.

The Holy Spirit:

  • Helps you understand Scripture
  • Convicts you when something isn’t right
  • Gives you strength to resist sin
  • Grows new character in you
  • Leads you into obedience

You don’t grow by willpower alone. You grow by learning to listen, respond, and trust Him daily.

-STEP #5

FIND A CHURCH

Following Jesus was never meant to be done alone.

You grow best when you’re planted in a healthy, Bible-teaching church. The Christian life isn’t just personal. It’s relational. God uses community to shape you, correct you, encourage you, and strengthen you.

In a local church you will:

  • Hear Scripture taught clearly
  • Worship with other believers
  • Be encouraged in difficult seasons
  • Build accountability and real friendships
  • Learn what obedience looks like in everyday life

The Bible speaks about being planted in the house of the Lord. Growth happens when you’re rooted, not isolated.

If you’re not sure where to start, we’ve created a Church Locator Tool on our main Resources page to help you find Bible-centered churches near you. Use it as a starting point as you look for a place to get planted.

Look for a church that:

  • Teaches the Bible faithfully
  • Centers on Jesus
  • Lives out both truth and love

You don’t need a perfect church. You need a healthy one. Show up consistently and commit to growing there.

-STEP #6

GET BAPTIZED

Baptism is not what saves you. Faith in Jesus saves you.

Baptism is your public declaration that you belong to Christ.

It symbolizes:

  • Your old life being buried
  • Your new life being raised with Him
  • Your decision to follow Jesus openly

Jesus Himself was baptized, and He calls His followers to do the same. It’s an act of obedience and a powerful step forward in your faith.

If you haven’t been baptized since putting your faith in Christ, talk to a local church about taking that step.

It’s not about pressure. It’s about obedience and clarity.

-STEP #7

FASTING REGULARLY

Fasting is a spiritual discipline where you intentionally set aside food for a period of time in order to focus more fully on God.

Throughout Scripture, God’s people fasted when they wanted to seek Him with greater focus, humility, and dependence.

Fasting does not earn God’s favor and it does not make someone more righteous. Instead, it helps quiet distractions and reminds us that our deepest need is the Lord Himself.

Jesus assumed that His followers would practice fasting. In Matthew 6 He said “when you fast,” not “if you fast.”

When you fast:

  • Spend time in prayer
  • Read Scripture
  • Seek God’s guidance
  • Ask Him to shape your heart

You can start small. Many believers begin with a half day or one full day of fasting while dedicating that time to prayer and Scripture.

Fasting is not about outward appearance. Jesus taught that it should be done quietly and sincerely before God.
